Troubleshooting: Capture Screen Images and Recordings
Learn how to capture screen images and recordings for problem-solving.
In order to assist users, Navigate360's Technical Support team may request captured images or recording your screen of our platforms in use. The article below reviews an easy option. Your local IT department may be able to assist further including console errors in your browser.
For troubleshooting, please include the full screen including address bar of the browser.
NOTE: For security reasons, please do not send files to Navigate360 Technical Support file sharing vendors (e.g. DropBox, SharePoint). Please include them as email attachments.
In Windows, use the Snipping Tool
1. Open Snipping Tool
- Click the Start Menu.
- Type Snipping Tool into the search bar and select the Snipping Tool app when it appears.
2. Create a New Snip
- Once Snipping Tool is open, you'll see a window with several options:
- Click the New button to begin a new screenshot.
- You can select an image (camera icon) or a screen recording (projector icon). You'll then be able to select from different snipping modes:
- Rectangular Snip: Click and drag to select a rectangular area on your screen.
- Freeform Snip: Draw any shape you want with your mouse or trackpad.
- Window Snip: Click on a specific window to capture.
- Full-Screen Snip: Capture the entire screen.
3. Capture the Screenshot
- After selecting your snip type, your screen will either darken or freeze (depending on the snip type you chose).
- For Rectangular and Freeform snips, click and drag to select the area or shape you want to capture.
- For Window Snip, click on the window you want to capture.
- For Full-Screen Snip, the screenshot is taken immediately.
4. After taking the screenshot, the Snipping Tool window will appear with your captured image.
5. Save or Copy the Screenshot
- To save the screenshot:
- Click the Save As icon in the toolbar (or press Ctrl + S).
- Choose the location where you want to save the file, name it, and select the file type (default is PNG).
- Click Save to store the image.
Additional Tips:
Delay Timer: In Windows 10 and 11, you can set a delay before the screenshot is taken, which is useful for capturing context menus or other elements that take time to appear.
- Click the three dots (ellipsis) in the Snipping Tool window and choose Delay.
- Select the delay time (e.g., 3, 5, or 10 seconds).
- After the delay, Snipping Tool will automatically take the screenshot.
Using the Screenshot Tool (macOS 10.14 Mojave and later)
To capture the entire screen:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 3.
- Your entire screen will be captured, and the screenshot will automatically be saved to your desktop.
To capture a selected area of the screen:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4.
- Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
- Release the mouse to take the screenshot.
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop by default.
To capture a specific window:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 4, then tap the Spacebar.
- Your cursor will change to a camera icon.
- Click on the window you want to capture. The screenshot of that window will be saved to your desktop.
To start screen recording:
- Press Command (⌘) + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot Toolbar.
- Choose one of the recording options:
- Record Entire Screen: Records everything on your screen.
- Record Selected Portion: Records only a portion of your screen that you select.
- Click Record to start the recording.
- To stop the recording, click the Stop button in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
Saving and Accessing Recordings
- Your screen recording will be saved to the location you specified in the toolbar’s Options menu (by default, it will be saved to your desktop).
- You can then play, edit, or share the recording as needed.
