Overview
In Compass, admin users may occasionally need to permanently delete student or staff accounts. This action removes the user entirely from the system and cannot be undone.
- Clever/ClassLink customers: Account deletion is managed automatically through nightly syncs with your Student Information System (SIS). Users removed from your SIS will no longer appear in Compass.
- .CSV/Manual import customers: Permanent deletion must be performed manually in your Compass Curriculum site.
Automatic Management with Clever/ClassLink
If your school or district uses Clever or ClassLink:
- In the future (release date TBD), accounts will automatically toggle to ‘Inactive’ when the user is removed from your SIS.
- If a student or staff member is later re-added in your SIS, their Compass account automatically resets to Active during the next sync.
Important: Currently, any manual deletions made in Compass will be overwritten by the nightly Clever/ClassLink sync based on the information in your SIS.
⭐Best Practice: Always manage user status directly in your SIS.
Manual Management for CSV/Manual Import Users
How to Permanently Delete a User
Go to Users – From the left-hand navigation menu, select Users.

Search for the User – Choose the user type (student or staff) and search by name.

Open the Action Menu – In the Action column, click the three dots (…) next to the user’s account.

Select Delete – Scroll down the dropdown menu and choose Delete.

Confirm – A confirmation message will appear. Select Confirm to permanently remove the user.

Use Cases for Permanent Deletion
Permanent deletion may be appropriate when a student or staff member will not return, such as:
- A student graduates.
- A student transfers or withdraws from the district.
- A staff member leaves employment permanently.
Important Notes
For Clever/ClassLink Customers
Do not delete users manually in Compass. If they remain in your SIS, the account will be recreated during the next sync.
To ensure permanent deletion, first remove the user from your SIS.
For CSV/Manual Import Customers
Once deleted, an account cannot be restored. The user can be recreated in the future if necessary, but all past data will be lost.
- If a user may return (e.g., a student on leave), it is better to mark them as ‘Inactive’ instead of deleting.
- To prevent a user from being re-added, make sure they are excluded from future .csv file uploads.
⭐Best Practice: Use permanent deletion only when you are certain the user will not return. For temporary changes, inactivation is the safer option.
