Exchange/Outlook Integration - Digital Threat Detection
Explore tools and methods to setup and manage Exchange integration for improved Detect performance.
Exchange/Outlook Integration
Using Detect’s Exchange Integration, the Language Engine can identify potentially harmful threats or mental health concerns experienced by students. As such, school-sanctioned email and productivity tools help support an early intervention approach to student wellness. Concerning content will be categorized and delivered into the platform as Alerts or Discussions in near real-time.
For a successful Exchange Integration, it is important to ensure each of these requirements are met:
Non-Delivery Report (Compliance Email)
- NDR is used as an email box for issues with a students outbound email not being able to be sent.
- If the email creates an NDR, we will not be able to scan the content of the email for threats.
Journal Rules
- Created by IC and sent to client with the steps on how to add journal rules in the Admin Center
- Can be for single district location to have all signals routes to one or multiple rules per location to separate where the signals are coming from (recommended)
Set Up Instructions
Step 1: Access Microsofts' Office Admin Portal.
- An administrator of the Microsoft Office domain log into the Microsoft Office console: https://www.office.com
- Select Admin from the list of controls.
Note: The image below is of old UI requesting user to add journal rules using the new UI – If you click Journal Rules in the yellow box, it will route you to the correct location shown in the second image
Step 2: Create Compliance Email
- After loading this page navigate to the Exchange (legacy) settings which is the blue cog wheel in the top left and is different from the Microsoft settings. This is where we create the Non-Delivery Report (NDR) email.
- Add desired compliance email to Send undeliverable reports to *.
Navigate360 Best Practice
Use the following format for your NDR email: Compliance@[yourdomain].com
Step 3: Adding Journal Rules
- Once the Compliance email is created, go to the Journal Rules back in the Exchange (legacy) and select +New Rule to start adding the required rules for your configuration
Note: Navigate360 does NOT wish to scan faculty (or other non-student) email accounts. If your Microsoft Exchange domain contains non-student email accounts, you MUST specify the mail distribution list(s) that pertain only to students in the below steps under the “If the message is sent to or received from” selection.
Add the Journal Rules below:
Journal Rules to be provided by Navigate360
Example: [LocationID]-[AccountID]-inbound@exchange.socialsentinel.com
- After the journal rules are in place, the Detect Outlook service will have read-only access to incoming and outgoing email from your domain.
- Mail distribution lists can be found in Groups section under Admin.
Note: If you have multiple mail distribution lists that pertain to students from different Detect locations (example: High School vs. Middle School students) we suggest configuring via multiple journal rules. Set up one journal rule per Detect location with the “Send journal reports to” configured to [LocationID]-[AccountID]-inbound@exchange.socialsentinel.com. These ID’s are entered in the blue urls above with location names.
Step 4: Confirm Completion with Navigate360 Implementation Consultant
Please make note to confirm with Navigate360 that all steps have been followed and to verify the Compliance email used for the connection.
