Learn how to use and benefit from the Gradebook feature of Compass.

The Compass Gradebook serves two main purposes:

  1. To check completion for students completing group-assigned lessons on their own device

  2. To mark completion for students who have received their group-assigned lesson through Teacher-Led Instruction

🚩 Gradebook is not currently a feature of Compass Behavior Intervention

Accessing the Gradebook

To get started, you can either click "Gradebook" from the left-side menu of the admin home page, or, click "Mark Completion In Gradebook" from any current lesson card.

If you have access to multiple Compass libraries, you may see an option for ‘Student Gradebook’ as well as ‘Mental Health Gradebook’

⭐The Student Gradebook is used for lessons assigned to groups from the Student and Character Ed. libraries, while the Mental Health Gradebook displays group assignments from the Mental Health, Resiliency, or Prevention libraries.

To review the parts of the admin home page and basic platform navigation, see Understanding the Admin Homepage

Utilizing the Gradebook

The gradebook lists students on the left-hand side. Each student name is a clickable link to access their Student Profile.

The top of the gradebook will display all lessons assigned to groups (classes or grade levels) with a start date that has occurred.

Applying Filters

Gradebook filters help you view relevant student lists and include:

  • School (for District Admins & multi-school School Admins)
  • Grade
  • Instructor
  • Class
  • Student Name
  • Assignment Title

Filters can be combined (e.g., selecting both Grade and Instructor will show only 10th graders assigned to a specific teacher).

The filters you see may vary based on your role as an Instructor, School Admin, or District Admin.

Click on each type below to learn more:

Instructors (Teachers)

Instructors will have access to filters for Grade, Class, Student Name, and Assignment. However, the displayed data will be limited to students assigned to any of the instructor’s classes, AND, those class rosters must be shared with Compass.

To view data for a specific class, instructors should use the Class filter. Since most assignments are given at the grade level, filtering by Grade may also be helpful.

Using the right filters is essential for finding the desired information efficiently.

School Admin Users

School Admin Users can view all students assigned to their school(s). Most will need to use search terms to filter by class, but the most common way to view data is by Grade, which displays all students in a grade regardless of class or assignment.

Another common filter is Assignment, especially when using the preset curriculum. The assignment list reflects the names set during the assignment process, and for preset curriculum, the Assignment Name and Lesson Name will match.

District Admin Users

District Admin Users will have the same functionality as School Admin Users and Instructors.  The significant difference is that district admins will also be able to filter by school.

🚩If you have students in multiple grades but the same class, they will typically have different assignments so it is important to understand that lessons in Compass are almost always assigned at the GRADE level.

If you don't see all of your students, you may need to filter on a different grade.

Interpreting Data

Once your filters are in place, you'll focus on the data.  The data is set up similarly to a spreadsheet, with the first column being the student name and each column as a separate lesson.  Each row is an individual student's completion results.  There are several places to click and get more information:

  1. Student Name - By clicking on a student's name, you'll see the student's individual record (Student Profile, image above)
  2. Completion Status - Use the key at the top of the gradebook to easily see lesson completion status

A blank box indicates that the student was not assigned that particular lesson.  That could happen for a variety of reasons such as:

  1. The student was loaded into the program after some of the lessons had been assigned.
  2. The assignment Start Date has not yet occurred.
  3. The student was in a class, school, or grade that was not assigned the lesson.

To manually mark a lesson as complete (i.e., after teaching a lesson whole group), click on the less title.  Please see how to Manually Mark Lessons Complete for step-by-step details.

Printing the Gradebook

You can print the gradebook data by clicking “Export Results” in the upper righthand corner of the page. The results will be downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet.
