Overview
The Social Emotional Competency Assessment (SECA) is a low-stakes, evidence-informed tool designed to help educators assess and support students' development in social-emotional learning (SEL). This guide provides a full breakdown of SECA components, scoring, digital tools, reporting, and recommendations for implementation across all grade levels.
Assessment Options: Long Form vs. Short Form
| Feature | Long Form | Short Form |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 40 | 17 |
| Domains | 8 social skill competencies | Condensed across 5 competencies |
| Time to Complete | 15–25 minutes | 5–10 minutes |
| Scoring | Detailed scoring by domain (Beginning to Advanced) | General level scoring (Struggling to Mastering) |
| Use Case | In-depth assessment, intervention planning | Quick snapshots, mid-point checks |
Assessment Calendar (Recommended Frequency)
Use Long Form 3x/year (BOY, MOY, EOY) for grades 5–12.
Use Short Form for grades PK–4 or for progress monitoring between full assessments.
Beginning of Year (BOY): August–September
Middle of Year (MOY): December–January
End of Year (EOY): April–May
This cadence allows for growth tracking, targeted support planning, and alignment with academic cycles.
Administering the SECA in your School or District
At Navigate360 we have provided two options for delivery; one, assigning the digital assessment through the lesson library, or, two, through downloading the pencil and paper option with the rubric to score by hand. The assessments are the same in either option. However, scoring for the paper/pencil will need to be done by hand.
How to assign
Digital SECA
Assigning the Assessment:
Log into Compass
Select Lesson Library (on the left hand side of the screen)

Search for SECA in the keyword bar, decide between the long or short and BOY,MOY or EOY.

Assign the lesson to the student or group of students you would like.

Paper-Based Option
Use the paper version with rubric scoring for:
Younger students (PK–4)
Students needing accommodations or tech-free environments
Log into Compass
Navigate to Download Resources, click on Choose Resources and select either the Long or Short SECA assessment

Once the new tab has opened you can download or print the assessment

After printing you can administer it to the student or group of students you would like.
Access Reporting for Digital Assessment:
Step 1: Open the "Reporting" drop down and select “SEL Assessments”.

Step 2: Filtering options are located at the top of the page.
– District Admin can filter the report by school. District and School Admin can filter the report by grade. Instructors will only see data for the classes visible to them in Compass.
– To filter by assessment, use the checkbox to show or hide each assessment: Beginning of Year, Middle of Year, and End of Year. These scores will populate as students complete each assessment.

Step 3: Compare the Scoring Guide at the top of the page to the averages shown in each domain or subdomain. This will show where students are mastering, developing, or struggling within the social skill competencies and subdomains. The example below compares the average score across all domains.
Note: Scores for each assessment populate once they are completed throughout the year. Refer to step 2 to view assessments separately as shown below.

Step 5: Click Export Results to download a csv file of the selected data. In the example below, clicking on the Average Social Awareness Score shows a list of students and their answers to each question in this domain with the option to export data if needed.

Additional methods to review data:
In addition to the reports above, the visuals provided include detailed information when hovering the cursor clicking each part of the visual. Click each highlighted section to view and export the data.

A list of Domain Scores by Student and individual Student Answers are located at the bottom of the SEL Assessment page. Click Export Results to download a csv file to sort and filter data. Results for beginning, middle, and end of year assessments are available in separate downloads.
