Learn how to effectively utilize the SSIS Reports to enhance your students' social and behavioral programs.
Use SSIS Assessment Reports in Compass Curriculum to review your students' social skills, stress, and mental health indicator results, spot students who may need support, and track growth across the school year.
🚩The SSIS2 Brief Universal Screener of Social & Behavioral Health (SSIS2 BUS) must bet purchased separately from your Compass Curriculum subscription. Once active, students take the screener and administrators view results right inside Compass; there is no separate site or login.
About the SSIS2 BUS
For the 2026–27 school year, the SSIS2 BUS replaces the SSIS SEL Brief Scales and the SSIS SEL + Mental Health Scales. It is a research-based screener, renormed on a representative national sample of US students collected in 2024–2025, and each informant takes about 5 minutes to complete it.
| Scale | What it measures | Items | Forms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Social Skills | Core social skills, including Social Awareness and Support (formerly Social Support Skills) [CONFIRM: current list of skill domains] | 20 (unchanged) | Student, Teacher, Parent |
| Mental Health Indicators (Emotional Behavior Concerns) | Internalizing (EBC-I) and externalizing (EBC-E) thoughts and behaviors | 10 (unchanged) | Student, Teacher, Parent |
| Stress Indicators | Signs of stress | 5 (new) | Student, Teacher, Parent |
| Stress Management | How students manage stress | 5 (new) | Student only |
- Who takes it: Students in grades 3–12 complete the Student form. Teacher and Parent forms are available only with the Multi-Informant version.
- How it's scored: Results are reported as norm-referenced T-scores and as 3-level performance ratings (see Understand your scores below).
- When: Most schools give the screener 2–3 times a year, in the fall, winter, and spring.

Understand your scores
The SSIS2 BUS reports results two ways:
- T-scores compare a student with the national sample. The average is 50, and most students score between 40 and 60 (a standard deviation of 10).
- Performance ratings place each student in one of three levels* for each scale:
| Scale | Performance levels | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Social Skills | Emerging/Developing · Competent · Advanced | Higher levels mean stronger social skills. Students at Emerging/Developing benefit from direct instruction with practice, feedback, and positive reinforcement. |
| Stress | Low · Moderate · High | Higher levels mean more signs of stress. |
| Mental Health Indicators (EBC) | No Concern · Possible Concern · Concern | Possible Concern or Concern in internalizing (EBC-I) or externalizing (EBC-E) behaviors may call for follow-up. |
*Why three levels? Social Skills used to have four levels (Emerging, Developing, Competent, Advanced). Very few students fall in Emerging alone, and the support for Emerging and Developing is the same, so the two were combined. Now every scale uses three levels, which makes reports easier for educators and families to read.
The SSIS2 BUS is a brief screener, not a diagnostic tool. Use results to guide instruction and decide where to look more closely.
