LessonLink lets you deliver a lesson live to a whole class or group at once, keeping everyone moving through the lesson together at your pace. Use this how-to guide to use LessonLink in your classroom.
⚠️LessonLink is currently available to Compass users with Instructor-level permissions only⚠️
If you're a school or district admin user and would like to take advantage of LessonLink, you can easily enable access by updating your user
permissions to include the ‘Instructor’ role. For step-by-step guidance, see article Understanding User Roles if needed.
Starting a Lesson
- From the Lesson Library or an assigned lesson, click Generate Class Code.
- A class code will be displayed on your screen. Keep this visible — students will need it to join.
- 🚩Note: you can start a session directly from the Lesson Library for an ad hoc lesson, or from an existing assignment.
- ⭐Best Practice: we always recommend creating assignments first, then delivering the lesson content.

Having Students Join
- Students can join your session one of two ways:
- From the lesson card in their assigned lesson list, using Join Group Lesson.
- From the navigation header, by entering the class code you provided.
- 🚩Note: a lesson must be assigned to the student before it will appear on their homepage for them to join it that way.

Running the Session
- As you move through the lesson, student screens stay locked to your pace.
- Student screens automatically unlock during the pre-quiz and post-quiz, so each student can answer individually.
- 🚩Note: locking only applies to that browser tab and does not restrict the rest of a student’s device or other open tabs.

Pausing & Resuming a Session
- If your session is interrupted, its status will change to Paused.
- To resume, go to Assignments -→ BI Whole Group and select the paused session. You’ll see the class code, current audience, and last known progress.
- When you resume, all students return to the same shared checkpoint together — even if some had already finished a section on their own before the pause.
- If everyone had already completed a section (like the pre-quiz) before pausing, they will not need to redo it.

Ending a Session & Credit
- When you end the session, credit is awarded to the students who were present at that time.
- Your LessonLink session will appear under Assignments alongside your other assignments, showing its status and history. This does not change how your other assignments are tracked or reported.
- 🚩Note: joining a session already in progress is not currently supported. A student who tries to join after you’ve started the lesson will see a waiting screen until the next session.
